Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) was one of a number of politicians arrested during an immigration protest on Tuesday. After speaking, the rangel 2lawmakers refused orders by Capitol police to get off the street and was handcuffed and arrested. During the arrest, Rangel says he was treated poorly by Capitol Police.

“I think they were trying to help me, but the cuffs were so tight that when I said loosen up the cuffs — and I wasn’t cursing then — in an attempt to loosen it up, one of the rookie cops actually tightened it,” he said. “And then when I said would you cut the damn cuffs off and put on new cuffs, he told me he didn’t have a cutter.

“They do the best they can under the circumstances, and it reminded me how other people who are not members of Congress can and should not be treated,” Rangel said.

Rangel was the first lawmaker arrested during the protest.
Among the other lawmakers arrested were Democratic Reps. John Lewis (Ga.), Luis Gutiérrez (Ill.), Raúl Grijalva (AR.), Joseph Crowley (NY), Keith Ellison (Minn.), Al Green (Texas) and Jan Schakowsky (Ill.) were also detained by Capitol Police at the rally.  In addition, almost 200 activists were also arrested during the melee.
Some Republicans criticized the rally.

“There’s something odd about House leaders … protesting on the Mall to get jobs for illegal aliens and pushing legislation to reduce job opportunities for US citizens,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) “The House must resist calls to replace struggling workers and instead fight for the public interest and to restore our shrinking middle class.”
