The attack on an upscale mall in Kenya’s capital that captured international attention a few months ago has a new development. According to FBI officials, it appears that the gunmen who initiated the attack are believed to be dead.
The attack on Sept 21 that killed at least 67 people was initiated by Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab. This was done in retaliation of Kenya sending troops to Somalia to fight the militants.
The FBI Legal Attache in Nairobi, Dennis Brady said in an interview which posted on Friday, ‘we believe, as do the Kenyan authorities, that the four gunmen inside the mall were killed.’ In addition to this, he also stated, ‘Our ERT (Evidence Response Team) made significant finds, and there is no evidence that any of the attackers escaped from the area where they made their last stand.’
As with any killings of this nature, if the attackers had escaped, there would have been great celebration by al-Shabab. However, that wasn’t the case.
The FBI has been on the scene from day one. The FBI’s presence has been to help facilitate and assist the Kenyan investigation and prosecution. It has been no easy task because of its complications. For example, during the investigation into the attack, there were a few explosions and fires. Brady added, ‘While ERT was doing its work, every now and then a propane tank would explode or vehicles on the edge of the collapse would fall in and catch fire.’
‘Four individuals charged in court by Kenyan authorities in connection to the attack are directly connected to the individuals who physically carried out the attack.’
This investigation isn’t over. There’s bound to be new developments into this matter. The FBI and Kenyan officials are still working together to uncover more information.
